Division of property in connection with divorce or death

As a general rule, division of marital property (bodelning) always has to take place in the event of a divorce or death. Where spouses separate, they can carry out the division of property themselves, but if they are not agreed or are unsure about their rights, it can be a good idea to discuss the matter with a lawyer.

The division of property must be recorded in writing and signed by both spouses. In certain cases it may be advisable to register the property division document with the Swedish Tax Agency.
