By means of a pre- or postnuptial agreement – also known as a marital property agreement (äktenskapsförord) – couples planning to marry, or who are already married, can decide for instance that specific property is to be the separate (i.e. individual) property of one of them, thereby excluding it from any subsequent division of property between them. Division of property occurs when a couple separate or one of them dies, but can also take place during marriage if the couple wish to make changes regarding who owns what in the marriage.
